Hong Kong is hosting the largest LGBTQ cultural and sports event in the world. Participants have expressed their gratitude and appreciation for the great organization of the games and meaningful experiences.
Contrary to the common perception that video games are only for nerds who shoot 3D baddies, there exists a vibrant culture of independent developers creating interactive realities. Some of them have a surprising level of queer friendliness.

VA-11 is a bartending game set in the dystopia Glitch, a fictional dystopia where you play Jill. She’s a sarcastic twenty-something reflecting upon her life decisions. Over the course of 19 in-game days, she serves drinks to a parade of colorful patrons and listens to their troubles.
The bartending aspect is pretty straightforward, with a small menu of options and a simple tap-based control scheme. The interesting part is how this mechanic ties into the story; making different drinks changes which story route the game takes, so there’s some choice-making here that might not be immediately apparent.
Sukeban Games, a Venezuelan developer, is well-known for its ability to blend mechanics with storytelling. The latest in this tradition is VA-11 hall-A. The studio’s team is largely from the country, which has been suffering under an economic crisis that has led to widespread famine and shortages of medicine.
The game takes place in 207X. While it covers some of the same topics as Glitch, such fascist control of government and corporate repressions, its focus is on questions of survival and work. It has a very strong LGBQT portrayal and is less likely to depict violence or other forms of oppression than other similar games.

For a game that doesn’t feature jump scares, dread-inducing meta experiments, or resource scarcity, Night in the Woods packs a hell of a punch. The 2017 indie darling is the story of Mae Borowski. She’s a 20 year old college dropout returning to her dying hometown, Possum Springs, to reconnect with friends from her youth. There are some changes in Possum Springs. The coal industry has collapsed and many secrets have been buried.
The anthropomorphic cast of characters in Night in the Woods embrace a youthful frivolity that might not appeal to older players. It’s not uncommon for the dialogue to include slang or jokes that would be inappropriate in other games. However, the characters are so well established it is easy to forgive. Mae’s pesky wit and her best friend Bea’s biting cynicism make it easy to understand and connect with them.
The main plot arc is an aging trojan horse, which ambushes the player by introducing themes of class struggle, faith, and systemic justice. The game is fucked up in some wild places, such as existential horror, the nature and purpose of God, or the feeling of life not being worth living. However, it spends the majority of its time establishing character relationships and quiet moments of friendliness between a small group of people who are struggling to make their worlds sense.

2064: Read Only Memories, the brainchild of GaymerX’s team, is a cyberpunk adventure with point-and-click gameplay set in Neo San Francisco. It is a retro-futuristic game that blends retrofuturism, a mature narrative and challenging gameplay in interactive pixel settings. This game isn’t afraid to embrace its queer identity, with several gay characters and a subplot following people who have become genetic hybrids. But it never tries to rub that aspect in your face or use it for cheap humor, instead letting its quirkiness be natural and charming in the best way possible.
Turing, the first sapient Relationship Organizational manager (ROM), helps a journalist find a missing friend. Although ROMs are commonplace in the world of 2064, Turing’s more special because he can choose and act independently. You’ll find red herrings, twists, and turns as you use your journalistic skills. Like any good mystery, the threat is greater than you think.
This is a great example of an indie game that feels fully fleshed out in every way. The colourful world and narrative, as well as the gameplay and multiple endings, make this game worth your time. Update 2064: INTEGRAL for 2017 brings a cleaner font (including a great performance from the robot), new voice acting, an expanded script, and a playable Epilogue chapter.

A downtrodden occultist is hired to assist a Space X type project in preventing an asteroid slamming against the Earth. He soon discovers it’s a massive artifact, maybe temple, maybe prison, to a space god from a war between dimensions that happened during Noachian times. It causes people to dismember family members and broadcasts psychic material. Despite its bleak premise, the book manages to avoid being too heavy-handed. Its world building is less complex than works like Doug Dandridge’s Empires at War but this might work in the book’s favor depending on your taste. Annette is an incredibly powerful character that bridges The Nameless to George’s earlier works (many images feel like a callback to Gog), and gives the protagonist of the book agency. Annette also offers a moment’s respite for the reader and protagonist.
The Nameless features an excellent narrator, which makes for a captivating experience. While some of the characters are somewhat underdeveloped, their development progresses throughout the story, leading to a satisfying conclusion.
