YAGS makes a great effort to show a realistic coming out experience. This includes the fear and reluctance that comes with it, as well as the potential negative consequences. You can choose to repeatedly avoid telling Adam you’re gay or tell him finally and risk his family rejecting you. Janet can force the player to attend Queers & Allies meetings. They meet everyone in the group, from Armoured Closet gay Carlos to nerdy students Hannah, Nikhil and Jake.
Some of the characters in the game are based on real people. A Mass Effect crew member is one, as well as a Final Fantasy antagonist and an Overwatch girl. Among the big hits of 2023, Larian Studios’ massive delve into Dungeons & Dragons – Baldur’s Gate 3 – arguably has the most substantial queer representation of any video game. Her millennial friends are also forced to face their own early 20’s. It’s a funny, honest, and harrowing look at the world as seen through the eyes of someone who doesn’t seem to have all the answers.
Night in the Woods’ dialogue is raw and emotional, giving characters a life-like feel. The art style is gorgeous, and the soundtrack is incredible. But the most important aspect of this game is the relationships between Mae and her friends. The emotional connection among them feels real, and the game’s authors clearly wanted to give players an opportunity to connect with these characters as individuals. Even the smallest of interactions with animals can be rewarding. The game is about the limits of choices when you’re faced with the systemic decay of capitalism and small-town isolation.
